SOME QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT SCRL (Southern
California Research Lodge)
1. WHAT IS A RESEARCH LODGE?
- SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA RESEARCH LODGE, F. & A. M. was instituted by the Grand Lodge
of Free and Accepted Masons of California in 1952"... to conduct research, hold
discussions, gather and preserve Masonic information, maintain a library, supply papers or
speakers at the request of lodges, and conduct a program of general service to the Craft
in the field of Masonic Education and Information." (CMC Sec. 385)
2. HOW MANY MEMBERS ARE THERE IN SCRL?
- Approximately 3000 and growing - located and living around the globe.
- (Editor's Note: At the November,1994 SCRL Installation of Officers, it was announced
the SCRL has well over 3000 members from all 50 of the United States of America, and over
20 countries around the world! - =dave=-).
3. WHO MAY BECOME A MEMBER?
- MEMBERSHIP in SCRL is open to any Masonic organization or to any member of a Lodge or
any Lodge in this jurisdiction, and any other Grand Jurisdiction recognized by this Grand
Lodge and which allows dual membership. Research Lodges do not confer degrees and
membership is acquired by plural affiliation.
4. DO I LIVE TOO FAR AWAY TO RECEIVE THE BENEFITS OF SCRL?
- No, many of our members are from different states and countries and each receive the
benefits of SCRL research and knowledge through the SCRL monthly mail-outs.
5. WHEN ARE THE MEETINGS HELD?
- STATED MEETINGS OF SCRL are held quarterly. Special meetings may be held anywhere in
California. Additional meetings, programs, seminars and education forums are held
throughout the year. All meetings and programs are open to any Master Mason and many of
our programs are developed for presentation at open meetings as well.
6. WHAT DOES A RESEARCH LODGE DO?
- SERVICE is the watchword of SCRL - Our members are offered the opportunity for
further service and personal development through individual research, participation on our
speaker panel and preperation of papers for publication. We service the Craft by providing
speakers, panels and seminars to Lodges and other qualified organizations at their
request.
7. WHEN WILL I BECOME A MEMBER?
- Your petition is read at our next stated meeting after its receipt and will be voted
on at the following stated meeting, so it could take up to six months for the process.
8. WHAT PUBLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE?
- PUBLICATIONS OF SCRL, include loose leaf volumes of our printed papers, our regular
bulletin, the SCRL Review, other special papers and announcements, plus our monthly
mail-out packages.
9. WHEN WILL I START RECEIVING THE SCRL MONTHLY MAIL-OUTS?
- In most cases, approximately one month after SCRL receives your application.
10. WHAT DOES IT COST TO JOIN?
- SCRL assesses NO affiliation fee.
11. WHAT ARE THE DUES?
- Only $20.00 per annum ($22.00 foreign). Life membership $420.00 ($462.00 foreign).
