Los Altos Lodge No. 712 Trestleboard Articles

December 2004

From The East

November sixth was our final event for the year, (not counting Installation). This event had been announced in the Trestleboard and our telephone committee attempted to contact all local brethren to see if they wished to join us in a visitation to the Masonic Home in Union City. Saturday morning between nine thirty and ten AM on November 6th, eighteen brethren, wives, widows and friends met at the rear parking lot of Los Altos lodge building. We drove directly to the home and were greeted, by a couple of the residents and Sterling Bailey. He was very happy and excited to have his Lodge make this visit. We were served lunch in the second floor dining alcove of the Adams building. After lunch and a short repose, we were given guided tours. Mr. Hunter and Mr. Beers divided us up into two groups and proceeded to guide us around the premises. It requires a good two to three hours to get to see all the interesting places and resident accommodations. I highly recommend this trip in future.

Our masonic retirement facility in California is indeed one of the jewels of our country and a special tribute to masonry in California. I would recommend that we make it an annual event to take this tour. All that attended at this trip were highly impressed and agreed with the suggestion of making it an annual event. Look forward to next year and put it on you calendar. As my year has come to an end, there is no way I can find to thank the brethren, their wives and families and my officers for the wonderful year they have allowed me to have. At times it was a little trying, but there is no greater tribute to a Mason than to sit in the east at degrees and this year we have been able to raise three brothers and I am humbled by the thought of participating in this great honor. Thank you brethren.

Fraternally,
Ernest Casilo
Master

The Westerly Wind

I would like to thank you for electing me Los Altos Lodge 2005 Master Elect. This year the Los Altos Officers Installation is scheduled to take place at 6:00 PM on Monday December 27th (St. John’s Day). El Camino Research Lodge will also install their officers at the same time as we do. A double lodge installation is planned as of this date. I have been advised that it will be tight, considering the small size of our lodge room, but most people believe it is doable. Double installations are allowed by the CMC and in fact are often the case in places like Stockton. I should prove to be quite interesting. I hope you can be there. My line of officers will be as follows:

Master - Luis J. Orozco, II
Sr. Warden - Harold Bain
Jr. Warden – Ernest Castillo
Treasurer – Jim Gable
Secretary – Richard Rosenberg
Chaplain – Kermit Williams
Sr. Deacon – Robert Sohigian
Jr. Deacon – Larry Fagan
Marshall – Paul Ladd
Sr. Steward – Craig Schoonover
Jr. Steward – Lu Claviho
Tiler – Earl Gault
Organist – David Kimball
Masonic Information Officer –
Maurice Dunbar
On Saturday November 6 Jeanna and I participated in the Los Altos Lodge visit to, and tour of the Masonic Home. In all 19 people attended. My wife Jeanna told me that it was one of the best trips she had ever made with the lodge. In fact almost everyone agreed. Worshipful Sterling Bailey met us there and spent the day with us. If you have never had a chance to visit the home you should really make it a point to go.

Although it is to late to tell the date, I will be scheduling at least one degree to be held at the home during 2005. Although I had attended degrees there several times over the years, I am always impressed with their lodge room.

One thing I learned is that there is a two and one half year waiting period to get in, so if anyone is considering it they should begin to plan early.

May this Solstice bring you brightness,
And an end to feeling blue!

May this Hanukkah bring you love and peace,
With your loved ones close to you!

May the Spirit of this Christmas,
Bring you blessings and good cheer!

And may glorious prosperity be
with you this New Year!
Fraternally,
Brother Luis J. Orozco, II
Senior Warden

ELEVATOR & ELEVATOR FUND

At the November LAMTA meeting an architect was selected and plans are in progress to sign a contract and proceed in the process of adding an elevator to the building.

ELECTIONS TO LAMTA & TRUSTEES

At the November meeting all of next years officers were elected. This not only includes the five major line officers but the new Los Altos Masonic Temple Association members. This year, as usual, three officers are departing and three new members were elected. Two of these new members are recent members to our Lodge.

First Brother Harold Hughes consented to serve again on the board. He took a year off and will now return. Brothers Craig Schoonover and Jason Marolda will join Harold as the three new members. Congratulations and thank you. The outgoing Master will be serving as a Trustee to round out all the offices that had to be filled for next year. To the new members, “Your term starts in January 2005. LAMTA meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, but you (and all brothers) are welcome to attend the remaining meeting this year (Dec. 8).

Is It a Stroke?

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms.

Doctors say any bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

* Ask the individual to smile.

* Ask him or her to raise both arms.

* Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.

* If he or she has trouble with any, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, they can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

Being in our holiday season I have planned a holiday video for the stated meeting ladies program. The video will be “Family Man” starring Nicholas Cage. It is a reverse spin on the classic “Its a Wonderful Life” with Jimmy Steward. I will also offer the option of seeing “Pirates of the Caribbean”. It will be you choice

ELECTION POLLING AT LOS ALTOS

The Election Board Officer, Helen Helson, in charge of polling at our lodge sent me the following letter;

Dear Mr. Castillo,

We who worked at the polling place at the Masonic Lodge on November 2nd were extremely grateful for the courtesy, comfort and consideration extended by you and your lodge brothers on election day.

David Kimball and Larry Fagan were wonderful and indispensable. As you know we had a very large turnout, and David’s and Larry’s knowledge and experience kept it all together.

Thank you so much for providing such a commodious environment for us to do the job.

Sincerely,

Helen Helson
