Los Altos Lodge No. 712 Trestleboard Articles

July 2008

FROM THE EAST

Brethren -

I am hopelessly behind this month and apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.

First, I’d like to congratulate Tom Dobrov, who became our newest Entered Apprentice on June 16th. Bro. David Anderson was in the East for the first section, and Bobbie Byers gave a wonderful lecture.

Remember our July AND August stated meetings are Stag Night affairs. A simple dinner will be served for brothers only to be followed by the Stated Meeting. Dress is casual (slacks & a sport shirt).

On Saturday & Sunday, July 12th & 13th, Los Altos will be having it’s annual Art & Wine Festival. We will have our Masonic Information Booth in front of the Lodge from 10AM to 5PM on both days. We need brothers to help man the booth, so why don’t you come down and help out for a few hours and help inform the community of our efforts.

On Friday, July 25, J. Kermit Williams will be receiving the SCIOTS Cornerstone Award at the San Jose Masonic Center. The Cornerstone Award recognizes Outstanding and Dedicated Service to Masonry and Kermit is truly deserving of the honor. Dinner is at 6:30PM and the cost is $15.00 per person. Reservations are REQUIRED. Call Randy Downey @ (408) 255-3719 to hold your place for this prestigious event.

On Sunday, July 27, Los Altos Lodge and Valley Star Chapter OES will be having our annual picnic. The cost is FREE, but bring a salad, side dish or desert to share and join with us in all the fun and good times.

As many of you know, the Elevator Dedication & Gala was postponed due to many calendar conflicts and low participation (we only had 6 reservations). Soooooo, we have rescheduled it for Saturday, August 9th, right here at the Lodge. This event is hosted by the Lodge, but RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. The event starts at 5:30PM in the patio area and dinner will be served at 6:30PM. Come join with us and our building tenants in celebrating the completion of this project. Elevator rides are still FREE for all!

At the June Stated meeting it was unanimously passed to restructure our Life Membership Program. A copy of the final resolution to our bylaws is included on page 6 for everyone’s reference and information.

In addition, due to the ever increasing Grand Lodge Per-Capita Tax we pay yearly for each member of our Lodge, we need to restructure our dues program to allow flexibility in response to this occurrence. On page 7 of this month’s Trestleboard is a new proposed resolution to change our By-laws accordingly. This resolution will also be distributed to attending members at e [text ???]

THE WEST WIND

My Brothers,

We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light - Plato

Having read this quote recently, I was reminded how appropriate it is in considering Masonry and how the various programs sponsored by our Grand Lodge our own search for further light in Masonry. Several of us, have attended and participated in the Masonic Information program and the Lodge Management Certification programs. Speaking for myself, it is a very enjoyable task, replete with knowledge gained. I recommend these programs to every one of you.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Bob Rowan, PM
Senior Warden

Resolution To Amend the By-Laws

Resolution To Amend the By-Laws Life Membership Program

Whereas the Per Capita Tax paid to Grand Lodge increases almost yearly and amendment of the Los Altos Lodge Dues structure is specified in its By-Laws in accordance with Section 809.230 of the California Masonic Code (CMC) requiring an amendment for each updated fee as specified in CMC Section 802.020, it is desirable that the Los Altos Lodge dues structure be amended to allow flexibility to that dues structure. Let it now be resolved that the Los Altos Lodge membership dues be determined each calendar year by the following formula:

Grand Lodge Per Capita Tax + $15.00 = Current Membership Dues

As a result, the Los Altos Lodge # 712 F&AM By-Laws, Article III, Section 2 shall be amended to read:

“The dues of each member of this Lodge shall be $15.00 per annum, plus the Per Capita sum approved by Grand Lodge at the immediately preceding Annual Communication, payable in advance on the first day of January.” (To approved by Lodge vote at the August Stated Meeting and subject to Grand Lodge approval).

Additonal Resolution To Amend the By-Laws Life Membership Program

Whereas, the Los Altos Lodge Life Membership Program (dated July 6, 1987 and approved by the Lodge on July 7, 1987) has not been approved by Grand Lodge and no longer conforms to Section 809.320 of the California Masonic Code (CMC), dated 2006, let it now be resolved that the Los Altos Lodge #712 Life Membership program shall be amended to the following:

Los Altos Lodge shall have a Life Membership Plan which shall forever exempt a member from paying regular Lodge dues after paying the below listed fees:

This amendment shall become effective after Lodge membership approval and approval by the Grand Master.

The Lodge Secretary shall send to each life member at his last known address, annually, a Life Membership Dues Card for the next calendar year.

A life membership is an executed contract requiring the consent of the Lodge and the life member to rescind it.

Life membership fees shall be held and maintained in a separate and permanent Lodge Life Membership Fund in accordance with CMC (2006) para. 809.150

Life members can only be removed from the Lodge Membership Roll Book under the requirements of CMC (2006) para. 809.330.

This amendment does not affect the amounts paid by Lodge life members prior to this amendment date.

Age At Time Of Entry
Into The Plan - Amount To Be Paid
Under age 49 - 21 times annual dues
50 to 54 inclusive - 19 times annual dues
55 to 59 inclusive - 17 times annual dues
60 to 64 inclusive - 14 times annual dues
65 and Over - 11 times annual dues
