A hearty thank you to our Senior Warden, Ernie Castillo, for attending the Los Altos High School scholarship awards night on May 21st in my absence (business trip in No. Carolina). Ernie presented the 2003 Los Altos Masonic Lodge $1000.00 scholarship to Ariele Greenfield. Ariele is an accomplished student who has been accepted to UCLA.
Our June Stated Meeting was a hot one…Literally. Apparently the compressor for the air conditioner has been down for a while but I’m told it has been repaired just in time for a warm/hot summer.
If you did not have the opportunity to indulge yourself at the June SM dinner, you missed out on our Jr. Warden wife’s cooking. Jeanna Orozco prepared a home-cooked traditional Philippine dinner. The food was excellent. Thank you Jeanna!
After dinner, Brothers Irvin Davis, Charles Westbrook, and Richard Rosenberg, PM, HA received their 25 year Mason pins. Congratulations! As a reminder, if you would like your 25 year pin presented to you, please notify our Secretary (Richard Rosenberg), Senior Warden (Ernie Castillo), or myself in advance of your attendance at a Lodge event so we are enabled to prepare a certificate for you.
Dr. Nancy Worthington (Wor. Pat Bailey’s wife) provided an educational evening regarding natural products and healing. It was a great lecture and was the first time in my recollection that the ladies program outlasted the Stated Meeting.
More exciting news!!! We have some extremely generous Members in our Lodge. To date, LAMTA has received $50,900 in donations from Members of LA712 and Valley Star No. 250, O.E.S. toward the elevator fund. Our gratitude is extended to Brother Eugene Murnane for his contribution of $25,000 and Worshipful Kermit Williams, PM, HA and his wife Vera Mae for their contribution of $25,000. If we include LAMTA’s original $2,500 donation and the matching funds, the elevator fund is now at $104,300. It is anticipated we will need a total of $280,000 for the elevator.
We will be conferring the 2nd degree on Bro. Matchell on June 23rd. We have two blue applications that have been read and received. The investigation committees are busy at work so we can ballot on these two perspective members at our July Stated Meeting. If all goes according to plan, we will be conferring two 1st degrees on Monday, July 28th.
Please come and support our candidates. We need to make good impressions on our candidates through your attendance and participation.
At our upcoming July Stated Meeting, we will be voting on two items for Lodge improvement. The first is in regards to replacement chairs for the officer’s stations and places in the Lodge as well as new matching desks for the Secretary and Treasurer. The second is the framing/mounting of the three degree charts on the north wall of the Lodge. The Stated Meetings for July and August are stag nights.
We are planning on having a Masonic information booth in front of the Lodge at the upcoming Los Altos Art & Wine festival on Saturday/Sunday, July 12th/13th. Currently three Brothers have stepped up and volunteered. Thank you in advance to Worshipfuls: Ernie Castillo, Dan McDaniel, and Pat Bailey. We need at least six more Brothers to volunteer for coverage on both days. Our intention is to provide information to interested Men, allow tours of the Lodge, and obtain a list of names to invite to a near future Masonic Information night. If you are interested in serving the Lodge for this event, please contact me (Rick: 650-903-0525).
Please review the calendar of Lodge events for the remainder of 2003. There are many opportunities for you to join us and support the Lodge. If you would like to help organize some of these events (as you can see there many to choose from) I encourage you to volunteer. We need your help to complete this year!
Fraternally Feeling Good,
Richard Weyers,
Master

I tell this story because last month I was asked to present the Lodge’s annual scholarship award at Los Altos High School and it brought back many memories of my high school days. It was great to see all that vim and vigor and bring on the world attitude. As Bro. Mark Twain is quoted as having said, “Is it not a shame that youth is wasted on such young people?”. What really impressed me was how much more mature these kids are than those of my generation. I believe the tremendous media explosion of the last 50 years has brought early realization to our youth of today.
2003 Los Altos Masonic Educators Scholarship was presented by Ernie Castillo, SW to Ariele Greenfield:
Our scholarship award went to Ariele Greenfield. She is a very intelligent young lady who takes a serious interest in numerous school activities, both academic and extracurricular. She has the position as Drum Major for the marching band and Managing Editor for the yearbook. Ariele is majoring in Education and will be attending UCLA. It would take pages to list her many accomplishments at Los Altos High School. After reviewing her academic record and the many programs she has been involved with I think that we are, and should be, very proud to award her our annual scholarship.
Another interesting outcome of our Scholarship came about because of the ad in the Los Altos Town Crier. As reported in lodge, I had to place the ad because staff member that interviewed me about the scholarship inadvertently failed to place an article in the paper. Evidently the management it felt that it was inappropriate to charge us for the ad and Mrs. Nyberg personally came and delivered a refund check to the lodge. I happened to be in the building taking care of some LAMTA business and was able to receive the check. In our ensuing conversation about Los Altos I asked her if she would be interested in 50 year history booklet. She was very much interested and I gave her a copy. She said she would read it and then turn it over the Los Altos Historical museum where it would be archived, so we should be in the Los Altos historical archives soon. As the old Spanish axiom says “No hay mal que bien no traiga”. I’ll let you the reader translate it. [My Easy Translator 3.0 says: “There is not badly that well not bring”. PB.]
I was forward[ed] this warning and want to share it with those who do not have internet access. PASS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW If you receive a phone call asking you to press any numbers for a telephone company test. Don’t do it. Here is an email I was sent from a friend. He received a telephone call from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician who was conducting a test on telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, he was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, he was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number. He was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons. He also verified this information with UCB Telecom, Pacific Bell, MCI, Bell Atlantic and GTE. Please beware.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. The GTE Security Department requested that he share this information with EVERYONE he KNEW. PLEASE pass this on to everyone YOU know. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass on this information to them. After checking with Verizon they said it was true, so do not dial (9),zero(0), the pound sign # and hang up for anyone.
Fraternally,
Ernest Castillo, P. M.,
Senior Warden
ELEVATOR FUND
As of May 2003 LAMTA initiated an Elevator Fund for the construction of an elevator that would service the dinning room, first and second floors in our building. LAMTA, offered to match funds donated equivalent to the first $100,000 in donations. The first estimate for this project is $280,000. As of June 10, 2003 there have been received by LAMTA donations equaling $50,900. When the matching funds by LAMTA are added to these, we will have better than one third of our estimates. On behalf of LAMTA and the Lodge, I want to thank all donators.
Details and progress of this project will be reported in this Trestleboard.
Again THANK YOU.
Ernie Castillo
Secreary, LAMTA
