Brethren –
Well, good news is here. The elevator is now COMPLETE! The State Inspector was in and gave us our operation permit on Tuesday, May 28th, and the Los Altos City Inspector gave us final buy-off the next day. Now all we have is some touchup and the final trim which is our part (being largely handled by yours truly). The elevator is in operation for everyone, so come to Lodge and get a ride on or newest improvement.
Now it’s time for a P-A-R-T-Y, to dedicate the job completion. I’m setting plans for Saturday, June 28th for our gala event. We’ll have a ribbon cutting at 5:00PM, followed by a catered dinner at 6:00PM. Dress is casual. Reservations are REQUIRED and space is limited, so drop me a line to reserve your spot. Yee-Haa !!!
Well, May was another busy month. On May 19th, we raised Brother Dan Hales to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. Congratulations Dan!! Bob Rowan did an outstanding job in the East, backed by a stellar degree team. Good Job guys.
We also presented Brother Seymour Wallace his 50 Year Golden Veterans Award at his home on May June promises more activities. Our stated meeting is this Monday. Bill and I will be preparing more delights for your palate, so make your reservations and come to Lodge. As I stated in the last Trestleboard, we will be voting on changes to the Life Membership Program, so come on down and take part.
On Monday, June 16th, we will be initiating a new Brother, Mr. Thomas Dobrov. Please be sure to attend this degree and welcome Tom to the fraternity.
With all that and the Elevator Dedication, we’ll be off and running toward Independence Day.
That’s it from the East. Have a wonderful month and don’t forget your Dad on the 15th!

My Brothers,
I had the distinct honor to represent Los Altos Lodge No. 712 at the Senior Wardens’ Retreat last weekend, and although this was the 11th Retreat that I have attended, it was still possible that I would learn something. Mission accomplished!
The very interesting sessions included topics like: Leadership styles; Goals and objectives; Membership trends, strategies and Programs; Lodge Finance and several others. I was encouraged to note the number of younger Officers and Wardens, who were in attendance as well as gaining information about the current California membership trends. Last year we raised more Master Masons than any year in the last 30. It is also interesting to see that the most successful Lodges are also the most active in their communities. Just as importantly, men are coming to the craft with more knowledge of Masonry than most of our current membership – likely gained because of the internet exposure, which speaks to the importance of our continuing proper Masonic education.
Of additional interest was that the Grand Lodge certification programs are being expanded to include “Lodge Audit” and the various modules are being developed to be completed “online”. Liberty Lodge in Santa Clara has already completed the “Lodge Finance” module as a group and instead of traveling to a remote location and spending an entire day to take the course, they completed the entire section in just over 2 hours and had a good time doing it. Perhaps we can accomplish the very same thing here at Los Altos.
The sessions at the retreat are valuable to any brother who attends. Sandy and I both thank the Lodge sending us.
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Robert D. Rowan
Senior Warden
The elevator is almost completed. A preliminary punch list inspection was done on the 20th of May. Carpet is all in and The Master is installing the base board. State inspection is scheduled for the week of May 26 after which we can use the elevator. There will be some finishing touches to be done but they will be deferred until the fall.
