Brethren –
This year has been very busy and the rest of the year may be the same.
Since I wrote the last Trestleboard, we presented the 2008 Hiram Award to Brother Ed Clarke. The dinner and ceremony were attended by many notables from Masonry and DeMolay. Congratulations Ed. You are truly worthy of this token of our esteem for your many years of service.
On April 14th, we presented our Public Schools Awards (see front cover). The evening was well attended and we even had some sideliners show interest in joining the fraternity.
The elevator project is nearing completion. The patio will be poured on the 24th. The interior was painted last week, and the elevator car is now almost completely assembled. Just some finishing touches and we’re back into operation. See the photos on page 6 & 7. We almost look like a building again!
As soon as we have final sign-off on the elevator project, we will have a Dedication Dinner and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The date has not yet been set, but stay tuned as you’ll want to be a part of this Los Altos Lodge landmark.
For May, at the Stated Meeting on the 5th, we may have a motion to amend the by-laws regarding the Life Membership Program. After exhaustive research we have verified its existence, but it appears to be in need of updating. All details should be completed before the meeting so we can move forward on this issue.
On May 19th, we may have a 3rd Degree. This will depend on our candidates but I look forward to seeing the Lodge with new Master Masons very soon.
Tentatively, we will visit Seymour Wallace at his home in Los Altos on Thursday, May 15th to present him with his Golden Veteran’s Award. Golden Veterans are brothers who have served the fraternity for 50 years. If you wish to join us for this presentation, please contact me for the details.
I hope to see all of you in Lodge. Whether you take an active roll or just come for the fellowship, there would be nothing better than to see you in person. Please plan to attend as often as possible.

Good Day my Brothers!
Recently, I was asked for a written list of a Master Mason’s duties, privileges and rights. Being unsure of the existence of such a list caused me to do some searching and I found the following from Georgia’s Lodge System of Masonic Education which follows in brief:
* A Master Mason’s first duty is obviously to live by and act consistently with his obligation.
* It is a Master Mason’s duty, legal and moral, to pay his share of the financial costs of the Fraternity, promptly and ungrudgingly.
* If unaffiliated he has the right to petition a Lodge of his choice for membership.
* He has the right of affiliation.
* He has the right and privilege of visitation to Lodges in which he does not hold membership. It is a right in the sense that he may seek admittance into any regular Lodge. It is a privilege in the sense that his admission into that Lodge is contingent upon his being vouched for.
Masonic relief is both a right and a privilege. Every Mason has the lawful right to ask for it upon need without derogation to his dignity or endangering his standing.
In short, there does not appear to be an actual list of duties, privileges and rights. They are scattered here and there in our symbols, customs, and laws. Some are explicit. Some are implied.
See you all very soon!
Fraternally,
Robert D. Rowan
Senior Warden
As our Junior Warden is out of town, the following is a note from the Worshipful Bobby Byers about Daylight Lodge:
For those who no longer wish to drive at night and would like to attend Masonic meetings during the day, Santa Clara Valley Daylight Lodge No. 844 is a regular Lodge that meets during the daytime. The Daylight Lodge is fully accredited to hold degrees, however it seldom does so. The Lodge meets the 4th Thursday of each month except for November and December at 2500 Masonic Drive in San Jose, California. The day begins with a low cost lunch at 11AM followed by a stated meeting at 12PM. For those who wish to participate in ritual we meet every non-stated meeting Thursday at 10AM in the Masonic Center.
Fraternally,
Bobbie Byers
