This is the last Trestleboard article I will be writing as Master. I can not thank the Lodge enough for this last year. It went by too fast. It was a great honor to be the Master of Los Altos Lodge 712 during it's 50th Anniversary Year. I want to thank the Officers for all the support and help you have given me this year. A special thank you to Bob Lake and Rick Weyers, though Bob had a full time job as Worthy Patron of Valley Star Chapter he was always there when I or the Lodge needed him. And Rick Weyers did a super job as Junior Warden, with all the extra dinners that we had he did a job above and beyond the call of duty. I will be there if and when you guys need help. I leave my office with a little work unfinished but I have no fear that it will be taken care of by the in coming officers. I was hoping that we would have had more applications but with one in the works the officers will have some work in 2002. If one out of ten of us brought in a petition that would be 18 or 19 new members. We have to stop hiding the Great Light of Masonry. We have to get it out where people can see it. If you know of someone that you think would be a good Mason there are ways of getting him. You are not suppose to come out and ask him to join but there is no reason your wife can not, or give him an information packet with a blue application in it. Believe me it will work. This is the hardiest article I have written so I will close by saying
THANK YOU FOR
ONE OF THE BEST YEARS
I HAVE HAD IN MASONRY !
Fraternally
William J. Malmstrom, P.M.
Master
A New Year is upon us, and I find myself being thrust into new and exciting opportunities. The first thing I must do, is thank Worshipful Bill Malmstrom for a wonderful year in 2001. Much more than just running the Lodge, Bill has been a personal friend and Masonic sounding board. Being the Lodge's 50th Anniversary Year, 2001 had a number of additional challenges and they all came off great.
Several of this years favorite events (based on comments from the members) will be repeated next year including: Superbowl party, crab feed, visitation, family picnic, coming home /roll call night, and Past Master's night.
In November I had the extreme honor of substituting for our Worshipful Master in presenting the Hiram Award to Worshipful Brother Gunnar Galsgaard. Gunnar has served our Lodge in many ways and I'm confident that all the members of our Lodge join me in congratulating him for his dedication to Los Altos Lodge. If this Trestleboard arrives in your mailbox before Dec 17, I hope you will consider joining us at the Lodge for a festive holiday dinner (12/17 at 6:30 PM.) I'm sure it will be great food and a good time for all.
We received an application for the degrees in December, and if all goes smoothly, we will try to have a 1st Degree conferral on Monday January 28 at 7:30 PM. Remember our Superbowl party Sunday Feb. 3 at noon. Bring your family and friends. Some food and drinks will be supplied by the Lodge, please bring additional food and drinks (semi-pot-luck), and join us for the afternoon. Our annual crab feed and sweethearts dinner will be on Feb 18 at 7:30 PM. Reservations to our Junior Warden. With all our dinners, the widows of the lodge are invited as our guests.
As a thought for January, I offer the following:
A lot of Masons are like wheelbarrows - no good unless pushed. Some are like trailers - they have to be pulled. Some are like kites - if you don't keep a string on them, they fly away. Some are like balloons - full of wind and ready to blow up. Some are like footballs - you can't tell which way they will bounce. And then, some are like a good watch - open face, pure gold, quietly busy, and full of good works. It has been pointed out to me that I have yet to announce the 2002 Los Altos Lodge Officers, so here's a list for your records:
Master: Robert Lake Senior Warden: Richard Weyers Junior Warden: Harold Bain Treasurer: Sterling Bailey, PM Secretary: Richard Rosenberg, PM Chaplain: Kermit Williams, PM Senior Deacon: Greg Buschek, PM Junior Deacon: Earl Gault Marshal: Eugene McMahon Senior Steward: Mike Sadler Junior Steward: John Graham Organist: Luis Orozco, FM Tiler: David Kimball Webmaster: Patrick Bailey, PM Trestleboard: Luis Orozco, FMFraternally,
Robert Lake
Master Elect.
I am looking forward to an exciting year at Los Altos Lodge. Our new Master, Worshipful-Elect Bob Lake, has made his calendar for the year and it contains a variety of interesting events for all. I encourage you to attend the events throughout the year and help keep our Lodge strong. If you need assistance in traveling to and/or from Lodge, please give one of your officers a call and we'll do our best to accommodate you. You will find our names and contact numbers on the inside front cover of the Trestleboard.
One of the exciting events for me personally is a potential visitation to Paradise Park Masonic Club in Santa Cruz, where I am a member. Perhaps this visitation will occur in May, the most beautiful time of year at PPMC. If you have not yet visited PPMC, you will not want to miss this!
We accepted an application for the degrees of Masonry at our December Stated meeting. That gave our officers a "kick in the pants" to get moving with respect to qualifications and proficiencies. If you would like to be an alternate member of our degree team, please let our Worshipful Master, Bob Lake, or me know of your interest. We welcome all who are interested, especially our esteemed Past Masters. At the conclusion of the reading the application, Worshipful Bill Malmstrom made it known that the officers should be prepared to confer the first degree of Masonry in January. Please let us know what you want from your Lodge. We'll do our best to accommodate you!
Richard Weyers
Senior Warden Elect.
Brothers please check your dues cards, if they are not for 2002 your dues are now past due and you are not a member in good standing. I have sent out all dues cards as I have received payment. If you sent in your payment and have not received your dues card, your check may have been lost in the mail. Dues are still $40, so please send in your check to the Lodge, otherwise a second notice will be sent at an additional expense to the Lodge. While you are at it, why not make a contribution to the Masonic Homes Endowment Fund, which is tax deductible.
Hiram Award Night at Los Altos Lodge
The Hiram Award, being the highest California Masonic Service Award given to a brother by his Lodge, has always been a very joyous occasion. This year at Los Altos Lodge November 19, 2001 proved to be no exception. Worshipful Master Elect, Brother Robert Lake, Jr. at the direction of Worshipful Master Bill Malmstrom, is shown presiding, while Worshipful Dan R. McDaniel, Grand Lodge Inspector of the 170 Masonic District, represented the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of California. Worshipful Gunnar Galsgaard, our 2001 Hiram recipient is also pictured on the cover of this issue of our Trestleboard. It was a truly grand night, which will be long remembered by all who attended, and a good time was had by all. - Editor
