 | MEMBERSHIP
Freemasonry has specific membership requirements. The candidate must be a man aged eighteen or over and of good moral character. There are no race, religion, ethnicity, income, educational or vocational restrictions. In California, freemasons may not solicit membership; the prospective candidate must join on his own free will and accord. Therefore, a prospective candidate must ask to become a Mason.
Becoming a Mason consists of three Degrees or steps that a candidate experiences on several nights. After he has received each Degree, there is a small amount of ritual work that must be committed to memory prior to advancing the next Degree.

Solicitation and Information: There is a distinct difference between these two. Solicitation is the active and persistent attempt to influence somebody to do something such as joining the craft. On the other hand, a man of character will not join an organization of which he has little or no knowledge. If he is unfamiliar with the details of Masonic membership, there is little chance that he will be interested until he has been exposed to some information, through friends or relatives who are Masons. Offering information is not solicitation thus a member may provide information on the purposes and principles of Freemasonry as well as membership requirements, financial obligations, expectations of members, personal development, family activities, charities, community service to a prospective member who in turn can decide on his own free will and accord whether to join or not. |
