Greetings Brethren:

I want to give a big thank you for the great turnout that we had at our April Stated Meeting. I am sure that both of our Golden Veterans were very appreciative. This month we will be enjoying a Cinco de Mayo meal prepared by Brother Bob Driggers. I am sure this is one meal that no one will want to miss. Please come down to the lodge and enjoy great food and fellowship.

I am writing this month’s article fresh off the heels of the Junior Wardens Retreat. What a great experience that was. I was able to meet brothers from all over the state as well as hear possible solutions to some of the problems that are plaguing all California Lodges. I am excited to share some of the interesting knowledge that I gained from the weekend.

One of the themes of my articles this year has been involvement. This, in my opinion, is the greatest challenge of Masons today. We all want to be better men. We all want to see our lodge and community grow and change for the better. We just do not always have the time to make it to the lodge. We are not alone. It was said this weekend that the average man surveyed claims to have an average of just three hours a month to devote to community service. Does this sound familiar in your life? I know that there are times that I can relate. I am as guilty as any of procrastination. Wanting to take that extra hour and just relax and do nothing. However, I have given myself a new challenge. I have challenged myself to do at least one thing twice a week to better the lodge, the community or myself. Even if it is just picking up the phone on my commute home from work and calling a brother to see how he is doing. Even if it means I meet a brother on a Thursday night for coffee because he cannot make it to lodge on Tuesday due to other obligations in his life. I now make that same challenge of all of you. Our lodge could make such a difference if each of us spent a couple of hours a day a couple of days a week reaching out to someone or focusing on something in the community to make our lodge and our community stronger and happier. Together we can make a difference.

I will close this month with a reminder of the Two Ball Cane golf tournament that is happening on May 12th. This tournament is a fundraiser for a barbeque that will take place at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital in August. The Veterans look forward to this barbeque, as we are the only ones that actually take to food into the hospital so no one goes hungry that wants a meal. We are expecting to feed in the range of eight hundred wounded Veterans at the hospital so every dollar counts. If you are a golfer or know any golfers, please consider this tournament as a way to say thank you to the Veterans who serve us with pride and honor. If you are not a golfer then please consider a donation to the event not only with your checkbook but also with your time. Thank you in advance for all your support. If you need more information, please contact me at jw@irvinevalley.org.

Fraternally,

John Morton
