Our Worthy Patron Reg Wilson sends a very big thank you to
everyone for their calls, cards and many kindnesses during his
surgery and
recovery. He misses everyone and hopes to be
back with us soon.
It has been very quiet at the Ashmans as David's Flu left
him speechless for over a week. SaDessa said unfortunately she
was to sick to
"enjoy" it.
Joyce Becker reports that her grandson is home from the
hospital
and recovering well from the encephalitis.
Margaret and Arthur Beddoe went above and beyond the call of
duty serving our refreshments three times already this year. A big Thanks
for all the wonderful goodies they served to us.
Margaret Dunifer has moved to Chandler Arizona to be nearer
to her son. Be sure to note her new address
Mary Page has moved. Her new address is in the new roster,
she
also has a new phone number. Mary is attending Pharmacology
school and
really enjoying it.
Millie and dark Shaver will soon be leaving for a trip to
Arizona
to visit with Vera Ragsdale. They report that Vera has been sick
but
is doing better. They will finish their trip joined by Ed Reynolds
in Las
Vegas.
Ed Reynolds has been traveling all over the world. He became
ill
in India but was able to fly home for treatment. He is now fine
and ready to head off for more adventures.
Joan Slater is back in Oregon and seeing lovely white snow
there.
Her house is almost completed Jean and Jim Vernon have been in Northern
California taking
family home to Eureka. Plans call for
a drive through the wine country.
Pat Wescombe sends greetings to all.
Congratulations to Evelyn Wilson on receiving her 25 year
pin. Evelyn has had a lot of illness this last year and it is great to see her
feeling good again. She plans to be with us for as many events as possible.
It will be wonderful having
her with us again.
We miss Nola, Russ and Lesley Wilson so much and know that
Russ
is getting better each day with the outstanding care he
receives
from "Nurse Nola" If all the Love and Prayers we
are sending
will make him well then he will be back to his old
self real soon.

AND BOUTIQUE
EXCERPTS
FROM OES IN REVIEW
by WM Ann Elger -- Jan 17th,
2002
There are many benefits for the members of the Order of
the Eastern Star in addition to the friends and fun we share.
Our Beautiful Senior Living Community: You may go to
live
here as a paying resident, or with all your expenses paid
depending on your circumstances. You must be 65 years old,
however your spouse may be any age. You must have been
a member of OES for 5 years and 3 of those in California,
and you must be sponsored by your Chapter. We also have
an outreach program to assist members who would like to
continue living in their own home, but need help to do so.
This is a great program with financial help if needed, but
also with information. Whether you need people to come
in and help, or need the house remodeled so you can get
around it yourself, they know how to get it done, and who
does it, and can help you.
We have two Cancer Funds available to our members. These
help to pay for any expenses, medications, home equipment
etc. that your insurance does not cover.
We have a relief fund available for those in financial
distress
A Disaster Fund to help those affected by disasters such as
earthquakes, fires etc.
Scholarships for education for our members and also non members To apply for any of these funds or admittance to the Senior Living Community contact the Worthy Matron. Relief requests are strictly confidential.
In addition to the benefits for our members we donate to many
charities including Heart Research, Cancer etc. This years
special project is Cancer Research.
We are part of a wonderful organization that is unlike any
other in the world. We take care of each other in good times and bad.
We are always there for our sisters and brothers.. . Do
invite your friends and family to be a part of our special family.
Of course the best part is the fantastic friendships, but even
if they cannot actively participate in our social activities
at the moment, they will have the many benefits of membership
available to them and later when their work or school duties
allow they can fully participate and enjoy the wonderful friendships.
We are the largest fraternal organization in the world to
which
both men and women belong.

Those
eligible to join are, Master Masons, their Wives, Daughters, Legally Adopted
Daughters, Mothers, Widows, Sisters, Half Sisters, Granddaughters, Step-Mothers,
Step-Daughters, Step-Sisters, Daughters -in-law. Grandmothers,
Great-Granddaughters, Nieces, Great Nieces, Mothers in law Sisters in law, and
Daughters of Sisters or Brothers. Also members active for 3 years or Majority of
the International Rainbow for Girls or Job's Daughters who are at least
8 years
old.

If you know someone who would like to join, ask the Worthy Matron for a Petition. Help the person fill it out, then return it to the Worthy Matron. There is a $26.00 fee payable to Tujunga Chapter OES which should be turned it with the petition.
The
Petition will be read in chapter, a committee of
investigation will be appointed by the Worthy Matron to go out
and visit the prospective member and report back. If that is
favorable, then we proceed to ballot. When we ballot white balls elect and black
cubes reject. It takes 3 black cubes to reject a person for membership. However
there should never be even one black cube as the procedure to follow is this. If
you ever hear of a prospective member or hear a petition read for a person that
you believe should not be a member then you go to the Worthy Matron and tell
her. It is in confidence and the matter is resolved without the hurt feelings
that would result from a black cube.
Ritual Books & Miscellaneous
Our Eastern Star Ritual is beautiful and meaningful. It can only be changed by General Grand Chapter which meets every three years. The words we say and many of the things we do are from this book. We follow it as exactly as possible. The Ritual cannot be copied in any form. If the work cannot be memorized it may be read from the book, however there is never more than one open ritual in the chapter room.
We also have an Instruction Book. It is written by our California Grand Chapter and changed by legislation at our Grand Chapter. It may be copied. Every year the Worthy Grand Matron and Worthy Grand Patron write a book of instructions for the Worthy Matrons and Worthy Patrons. These are their requests for how they would like to have things done for that year.
This is a few of the many items we covered in our OES in review night. If you have any questions about anything, would like help to brush up on your signs to visit other chapters, or any other information,- be sure to ask your Worthy Matron or worthy Patron we will be happy to answer all questions and help you in any way.

2002 ROSTER
A huge thanks to our Worthy Patron Reg Wilson for preparing and printing our Roster before his surgery, and to Bob Elger for cutting and stapling them together. If you have not received one directly from Ann it should be enclosed with this newsletter. If you did not receive one or if you have any corrections or additions to the Roster please let Ann know.
A big thank you to all our refreshment chairmen the great food and lovely decorations you prepare for us are truly appreciated. If anyone needs to change a date or would like to volunteer to help, or for one of the open nights please let Ann know. WHAT TO WEAR I have received many questions and comments about what to wear. This year I prefer that you dress in what you are most comfortable in, and if a theme night something that fits the theme. Red for Valentines, Green for St. Patricks etc. If we are going to have a formal night I will note it in newsletter. otherwise wear something warm, or cool and comfortable. Gentlemen a sweater, shirt, sport coat, suit or Tux is fine. Ladies if you are on the sidelines whatever you are comfortable in is fine. For officers please wear a long skirt or dress. The thing I want 'to stress is that the most important thing is that you COME!!
