In W.W.II., (The big one), he served as a lieutenant on the destroyer, “Erich Giese”, which was sunk in the battle of Narvik, Norway, (north of the polar circle), when the English unsuccessfully tried to occupy Norway. After submarine training he was commissioned as Chief Engineering Officer on the “U–406” at the German Danzig Shipyards (later to become Lech Valesa′s place of employment as an electrician before he became president of Poland). Wor. Rudi was assigned to the U–boat naval base at St. Nazaire in German occupied France, from which he fought the allied convoys for 3 years. For one year he was 1st Engineering Officer on the pocket battleship “Luetzow” in northern Norway (Alta FJord). Ten years later he was a resident of Buffalo, NY, working for Chevrolet Aviation Engine for 6 years; those were 6 years too many. In 1959 he received a call to sunny Southern California from Hughes Aircraft Co. where he worked for 30 years in their corporate offices and retired on 8/8/88 at 8:08 in the morning (8 is his lucky number – he likes the shape of that figure). He resides with his wife (still his 1st one for more than 50 years) Dorothea (Oppeln), a former German Navy RN, in a comfortable home in Westchester, L.A. (they burned their mortgage more than 30 years ago, and are enjoying proposition 13). They have one daughter, Elisabeth (born in Hamburg), a C.Ph.T.
