Past Masters: A Closer Look

1987 -GENE S. ELLSWORTH

Installation of officers was held on January 19th, 1987, at the San Jose Masonic Temple. Host for the evening was Worshipful Harold L. Swank, Masonic Inspector and brother-in-law of incoming Master Gene Ellsworth. Installing Officer was Worshipful Thomas V. Baker. Worshipful Donald R. Kidder was Master of Ceremonies and Worshipful Ralph Simmons was installing Chaplain. One of the installation evening highlights for Worshipful Gene was the applica- tion for membership presented to him by his son Lawrence P. Ellsworth. Several of the Islam Shrine Comics also came in costume to greet Worshipful Gene and entertain the guests. Brother Andrew Bonfield, a long time friend from their days together as Boy Scout Commissioners, flew in from Hawaii to attend the installation. It was a busy year as we tried to include many activities for wives and families. The annual Columbia trip was held in May when Brother Glenn C. Stidger received his Third Degree. This was followed in the evening by a dinner for members, wives and guests.

The Lodge barbeque as held at Vasona Park in July with more than fifty members and guests enjoying ribs and steaks with all the trimmings. For the first time we combined Widows Night with the annual steak barbeque at the Temple and it turned out to be a very successful event, with well over one hundred in attendance. Anew event to underscore the Lodge's commitment to Law and Order was held in July. An Awards Night dinner was held to honor an officer of the San Jose Police Department. Officer Raymond Gonzales, a member of the Merge Unit, was' chosen by the Department as the honoree. He was introduced by Deputy Chief Fred Abrams who gave a brief history of the Merge Unit and also some back- ground on Officer Gonzales. The officer was then presented an engraved plaque on behalf of Golden Rule Lodge in appreciation of his service to the community. Worshipful Donald R. Kidder was the recipient of the Hiram Award at a dinner in his honor. It was a very emotional evening but all present agreed that Worshipful Don was a most worthy recipient.

Fifty year Golden Veteran pins were presented to William L. Pierce on April 6th and to Emmitt C. Critchlow on August lOth. Brother Kendrick Brown was the Third Degree candidate at Past Masters night on October 19th.

At the December Stated Meeting Brother Jerry L. Crosby, Sr. was elected to serve as Master of the Lodge for 1988. It was a good year overall with seven First Degrees, four Second Degrees and seven Third Degrees being conferred. Sadly, the Lodge also had fourteen brethren who passed away.
