Five-Lodge Joint Installation

Louis Theron Smith, popular dentist nicknamed "Loose Tooth," which pleased him mightily, was elected Dec. 13, 1920, as Master for 1921. Oran L. Slaght, banker, was named Secretary.

Grand Master George F. Rodden appeared again in his official capacity to install the officers of five San Jose lodges on the second-floor lodge room on the night of Dec. 22, 1920. Involved in the joint installation were San Jose No. IO, Friendship No. 210, Fraternity No. 399, Morgan Hill No. 463, and Golden Rule No. 479.

By the end of the year, 45 names were signed to the book of by-laws, 25 of whom were charter members.

Masonic Temple Lot Site Sought

Early in the year 1921, Golden Rule's Master, Louis T. Smith, appointed a committee, on March 14, to meet with like committees of other San Jose lodges with the view to purchasing a lot on which to build a new Masonic Temple.

On May 9, letters of thanks were sent to William Lloyd and V. (Ben) Stone for their effort in "making and completing" the pillars. On June 13, another letter of thanks went to Guy E. Marshall for donating the globes which surmounted the pillars. Golden Rule on Aug. 8 donated to each of two new lodges under dispensation, Cupertino and Sunnyvale.

At the Oct. 10 stated meeting Albert Sandbo and Louis M. Kimberlin were appointed as a committee to draw up a resolution creating a lodge Board of Trustees.

Alfred Adams Hapgood, small in stature but a giant in Masonry over the years, was elected Dec. 12 as Master for the year 1922. He and otherofficers of Golden Rule Lodge were installed Dec. 30 at another joint installation, five lodges again this time, by the new Most Worshipfull Grand Master Samuel E. Burke, assisted by the Very Worshipful Thomas J. Baker, Grand Lecturer, as Master of Ceremonies. Other lodges involved were San Jose No. 1O, Friendship 210, Fraternity 399, and Morgan Hill 463.

At the close of Worshipful Master Smith's 1921 year Golden Rule membership had risen to 81.
