HISTORY

On May 20, 1910, thirteen Master Masons met in Los Angeles to take measures to establish a new lodge of Free and Accepted Masons. The Lodge to be created was to be called “Elysian Lodge”, the name being selected for two reasons; first, that the proposed location was located near Elysian Park, and second, that the mythological meaning would be expressive of the harmony existing in a well-regulated Lodge. On July 25, 1910 after proper dispensation had been received from the Grand Master, the first stated meeting was held. The first meeting place for Elysian Lodge was at the Masonic Temple at Pico and Figueroa Streets on the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles.

On December 13, 1916 Elysian moved to a new facility at the Northeast corner of Sunset Boulevard and Echo Park Avenue, which would be our home for 46 years. We occupied the  second floor of the building, over the neighborhood drugstore for the rental sum of $30.00 per month until August of 1914 when our Lodge purchased the property.

In 1957, the land upon which our present building occupies was located and purchased. On April 1958, the Cornerstone was laid for the new building under the auspices of the Grand Lodge of California with the formal dedication occurring on January 10, 1959. Elysian Lodge proudly looks back on 100 years of history in our Masonic Fraternity. Our silver anniversary was celebrated on October 17, 1935, our golden on May 26, 1960 and our diamond on September 19, 1985. As Elysian Lodge reaches it’s 100 year Centennial anniversary, we celebrate Freemasonry, it’s achievements, challenges and privileges for the current and future generation of Masons yet to enter our Fraternity.
