Trestleboard Messages for May 2008

From the East

Brethren & Ladies,
Greetings Brethren and Ladies, May has come upon us so fast and 2008 is close to being halfway over with 2008. Congratulations to the Teacher of the Year Award recipients. Out of all of the professions you have not only the hardest Job to take on, but as well, it can be the most rewarding. Thanks to Brother Rick Lake who put forth a lot of effort for Public Schools Night last month, which were greatly appreciated.
Additionally, I hope everyone enjoyed Burbank on Parade and the barbecue. Thanks to all of you who were there to show your support.
For our May 1st Stated Meeting, we will be having the Inspector's Official Visit from the 326th District, our own Jan Eddy, Worshipful Inspector, as well as the official Burbank Shrine Club. Our Junior Steward, Steve Harris, is the President of the Burbank Shrine Club. Brother Harris, we are looking forward to a great turnout from your club. Our Senior Warden, Jeff Yates and his lovely wife Rita, will be attending the Senior Warden's Retreat on May 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. After many discussions with Jeff, I know that he has a great year planned, and that he welcomes any ideas from the Brethren for his upcoming year. On May 15th, we will be having an Entered Apprentice degree for Steven Jurman followed by a Fellowcraft degree on May 22nd for Brother Simon Mcllroy. Lastly, I would like to welcome and congratulate Brother Andrew McReynolds, who was raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on April 24th.

SET THE DATE:

June 8th at 3 o'clock will be the Ladies Tea at the Burbank Masonic Center. The cost is $12.00 and tickets will be available at the Stated Meeting this month. June 26th is our Past Masters Night when Billy Campbell will be raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. Worshipful John Brennan, our Junior Past Master, will be contacting all Past Masters to participate in this degree. I encourage all Master Masons to attend this unique event. On July 19th there will be a picnic held at the Masonic Homes in Covina. Please set the date for this occasion, in addition to the picnic, a tour will be provided of their facility. We will be carpooling to Covina for this event. More details to follow next month. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the mothers of Burbank Masonic Lodge a Happy Mother's Day. And all have a safe Memorial Day Weekend. Fraternity.
I thank everyone for making dinner reservations. This has been a great help to our Junior Warden, Andy DeCaro, for preparing the meals.

Fraternally,
Marc S. Canterbury,
Worshipful Master

RUTH BEYERS

As some may have already heard, Ruth Beyers, widow of Past Master Karl Beyers, had a stroke on Monday morning, April 21st. It seems that she had a series of small strokes leading up to this which went undetected. She has lost the use of the left side of her body. Her speech is only slightly affected. Her hearing and vision are still good. She is currently in the rehab section of the hospital.
As of 25th April she was doing much better. She underwent an ultrasound, 2 occupational therapy sessions and 2 physical therapy sessions and was up in a wheelchair for four hours. Whew! That's more than I do many a day. Her attitude is phenomenal and she is working very hard to do what the therapists tell her and then some.
If anyone would like to send her a card please send it care of
      Nancy Bulgin
      1240 S. 9th Street
      Arcadia, CA 91006
Nancy will make sure that she gets it.
Your prayers for her are appreciated.

From the West

Brethren!
I thank all the Brethren who joined me at Johnny Carson Park and helped me with the Child ID program. It's actually fun to occasionally shed the formality of my Lodge duties and function purely as the member of a service club, reaching out to the community. Child ID is a simple yet meaningful way to do just that.
On Saturday, May 10th Burbank Lodge is hosting the Child ID Program at the Burbank Fire Department Open House. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend, so, Andy DeCaro, Junior Warden and Sterling Lockett Chaplain have graciously offered to host the program. If anyone is available on that day, Worshipful DeCaro and Brother Lockett would appreciate your help. Contact me if you would like to volunteer.
Recently, I had the privilege of taking part in a First Degree Ceremony at Magnolia Park Lodge No. 618. Worshipful Don Johnstone invited me to teach the First Degree Lecture to their new Entered Apprentices (In regard to the lectures, I prefer the term "teach," as opposed to "give" or "perform.") I must say that Worshipful Johnstone and his talented core of officers made me feel welcome. I am proud to be associated with this distinguished and growing Lodge, Have a great month!

Fraternally,
Jeff Yates,
Senior Warden

I SAT IN LODGE WITH YOU

There is a saying filled with cheer,
Which calls a man to fellowship.
It means as much for him to hear
As lies within the brother grip.
Nay, more! It opens wide the way
To friendliness sincere and true:
There are no strangers when you say
To me: "I sat in lodge with you."

                         — Brother Wilber D. Nesbit.

From the South

Brethren:
On May 5th 1862 the French attacked two forts in the city of Puebla. There were 6000 French soldiers and 2000 Mexican soldiers. By the end of the day one of the forts was destroyed and there were 1,000 French soldiers were killed. The Mexicans had won the war. Folks in Mexico don't really celebrate this holiday. They have two more important holidays that they celebrate, Mexican Independence Day (September 16th) and the Mexican revolution (November 20th). But the city of Puebla continues to celebrate this day with parades, dancing and special foods.
The word fajita which is a generic term in Mexican cuisine referring to grilled meat served on a tortilla. Mexican ranch hands have been eating this since 1930, but the word fajita is not known to have appeared in print until 1971. Newspaper ads for fajitas began appearing in regional newspapers in Texas in 1975. A Mexican Cook Book published in the Southwest in 1980 still had no mention of fajitas.
Come join us on Thursday, May 1stst to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. We will be serving chicken and beef fajitas with all of the accompaniments.
Social is at 6:00 PM and dinner will follow. The cost is $10.00 for men and free for the ladies. Make your reservations by calling. Norm Furman, Secretary 818 848 3750 or e:mail him at
Secretary .

PERCEPTIONS

The starting point of conversation is contradiction, and this democratic manners do not tolerate. Contradiction implies that one or another of the conversing group is wrong, and under modern manners peculiar feelings cling to error.

From the Secretary's Desk

Brethren:
A MASONIC WINTER

It was already late in the winter and the Masons in a remote lodge asked their new Worshipful Master if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.
Since he was the Master in a modem society he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he could not tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his brethren that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the lodge should collect firewood to be prepared.
But, being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He, using his cell phone, called the national weather service and asked, "is the coming winter going to be cold?"
"It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold," the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the Master went back to his brethren and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared.
A week later he called the national weather service again. "Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?" "Yes," the man at national weather service again replied, "it's going to be a very cold winter." The Master again went back to his brethren and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find, Two weeks later the Master called the national weather service again, "are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?" "Absolutely," the man replied. "It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters we've ever seen!"
"How can you be so sure? " The Master asked.
The weatherman replied, 'The Masons are collecting firewood like crazy."

And, remember, collect those aluminum tabs from your cans and save them. Bring the tabs to the lodge and they will be forwarded to the Children's Shrine Hospital.

Norm Furman, Secretary
