Brethren!
I thank all the Brethren who joined me at Johnny Carson Park and helped me with the Child ID program. It's actually fun to occasionally shed the formality of my Lodge duties and function purely as the member of a service club, reaching out to the community. Child ID is a simple yet meaningful way to do just that.
On Saturday, May 10th Burbank Lodge is hosting the Child ID Program at the Burbank Fire Department Open House. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend, so, Andy DeCaro, Junior Warden and Sterling Lockett Chaplain have graciously offered to host the program. If anyone is available on that day, Worshipful DeCaro and Brother Lockett would appreciate your help. Contact me if you would like to volunteer.
Recently, I had the privilege of taking part in a First Degree Ceremony at Magnolia Park Lodge No. 618. Worshipful Don Johnstone invited me to teach the First Degree Lecture to their new Entered Apprentices (In regard to the lectures, I prefer the term "teach," as opposed to "give" or "perform.") I must say that Worshipful Johnstone and his talented core of officers made me feel welcome. I am proud to be associated with this distinguished and growing Lodge, Have a great month!
Fraternally,
Jeff Yates,
Senior Warden
I SAT IN LODGE WITH YOU
There is a saying filled with cheer,
Which calls a man to fellowship.
It means as much for him to hear
As lies within the brother grip.
Nay, more! It opens wide the way
To friendliness sincere and true:
There are no strangers when you say
To me: "I sat in lodge with you."
Brother Wilber D. Nesbit.

Brethren:
On May 5th 1862 the French attacked two forts in the city of Puebla. There were 6000 French soldiers and 2000 Mexican soldiers. By the end of the day one of the forts was destroyed and there were 1,000 French soldiers were killed. The Mexicans had won the war. Folks in Mexico don't really celebrate this holiday. They have two more important holidays that they celebrate, Mexican Independence Day (September 16th) and the Mexican revolution (November 20th). But the city of Puebla continues to celebrate this day with parades, dancing and special foods.
The word fajita which is a generic term in Mexican cuisine referring to grilled meat served on a tortilla. Mexican ranch hands have been eating this since 1930, but the word fajita is not known to have appeared in print until 1971. Newspaper ads for fajitas began appearing in regional newspapers in Texas in 1975. A Mexican Cook Book published in the Southwest in 1980 still had no mention of fajitas.
Come join us on Thursday, May 1stst to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. We will be serving chicken and beef fajitas with all of the accompaniments.
Social is at 6:00 PM and dinner will follow. The cost is $10.00 for men and free for the ladies. Make your reservations by calling. Norm Furman, Secretary 818 848 3750 or e:mail him at Secretary .
Fraternally,
Andy De Caro, P.M.

PERCEPTIONS
The starting point of conversation is contradiction, and this democratic manners do not tolerate. Contradiction implies that one or another of the conversing group is wrong, and under modern manners peculiar feelings cling to error.

Brethren:
A MASONIC WINTER
It was already late in the winter and the Masons in a remote lodge asked their new Worshipful Master if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild.
Since he was the Master in a modem society he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he could not tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his brethren that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the lodge should collect firewood to be prepared.
But, being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He, using his cell phone, called the national weather service and asked, "is the coming winter going to be cold?"
"It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold," the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the Master went back to his brethren and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared.
A week later he called the national weather service again. "Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?" "Yes," the man at national weather service again replied, "it's going to be a very cold winter." The Master again went back to his brethren and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find, Two weeks later the Master called the national weather service again, "are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?" "Absolutely," the man replied. "It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters we've ever seen!"
"How can you be so sure? " The Master asked.
The weatherman replied, 'The Masons are collecting firewood like crazy."
And, remember, collect those aluminum tabs from your cans and save them. Bring the tabs to the lodge and they will be forwarded to the Children's Shrine Hospital.

You that would judge me do not judge alone
This book or that, come to this hallowed place
Where my friends 'portraits hang and look thereon;
Ireland's history in their lineaments trace;
Think where man's glory most begins and ends
And say my glory was I had such friends.
