TAKING WINE

During dinner the Master of the Lodge MAY "Take Wine" in the English manner with various brothers. This action will be announced, and presided over by the Worshipful Brother who is serving as "Toast Master" or "Master of Ceremonies" at Table Proceedings.
The announcement of wine-taking is made by the "Toast Master" in a single sentence, i.e.: "Brethren, the W.M. will take wine with his Wardens." Whereupon, the Master and the Brother(s) designated for the honor rise and the Master may make remarks recognizing the honoree(s), who then salute one another with their glasses and drink, then resume their seats. The Master may call on one of the honorees for his comments.
ONLY THOSE WHO ARE CALLED TO TAKE WINE WILL STAND. THE REMAINDER OF THE COMPANY WILL REMAIN SEATED. If the Toastmaster or the Master calls for the Brethren to take wine with a particular guest or other Companion, then ALL STAND. It is considered polite for short applause after each wine taking.

TOASTING

Toasting should not be confused with taking wine. Toasting is giving an honor, whereas taking wine is merely a social grace. A toast is drunk by the assembled company while standing. If an individual is toasted, he remains seated and may drink at the board if he so desires, and will rise only when called to make a response. In this way, the individual who is being toasted receives honor from his fellows and then expresses his thanks and any other thoughts he may have WITH BREVITY.

FIRE

Fire will be called and led by the proposer of the Toast immediately following the Toast and before the Brethren are seated.

CEREMONY OF THE SEVEN TOASTS

The format for each of the toasts will be the same. Although there are many other ways to do Toasts in various rituals, please follow the pattern given below for each toast this evening.
1.
The Master will stand and rap twice to call up the Wardens as each toast is announced. This applies to all toasts.
2.
The Wardens will then rise, the Senior Warden will rap twice, and then the Junior Warden will rap twice. The Master will then instruct the Wardens to see that all cannons are charged in the columns of the West and South.
3.
After their response, the Master will say: "Brothers, kindly be upstanding for the toast to."..........." (When this statement is completed, all rise [except anyone being toasted].)
4.
The Master will then either propose the toast himself, or he will invite a brother to do so, after introducing the brother.
5.
The proposer will say: "Worshipful Master and brothers, "I give you ........"
(If individuals are being toasted (the Master or visitors) they will take their seat when their toast is identified.)
All standing will raise their "Cannon" in front, shoulder high, with the arm extended comfortably. The glass is held in this position during the reading of the Toast and during the response by the Brethren.
6.
The proposer will then give the toast, ending with "Brethren, ...." followed by the response that is to be given.
7.
All present will then respond by repeating the last phrase as given by the proposer.
8.
The proposer will then say: "Brethren, The Good Fire, taking your time from me."
9.
The procedure for "Good Fire" is:
a. The proposer will recite the following at a smart pace, marking time with his Cannon (Firing Glass), in the air;
b. All present follow the cadence set by the proposer, repeating, with the proposer, in unison:
Vivat, Vivat, Vivat,
Vivat, Vivat, Vivat,
Vivat, Vivat, Vivat
On first command "Vivat", move the glass to the left shoulder.
On second command "Vivat", move the glass across the throat to the right shoulder.
On third command "Vivat", move the glass back to the starting point, in front, completing a triangle.
Repeat this sequence with each set of three "Vivat's" completing three triangles, ending with the glass in front and at arms length.
("Vivat" is said while the glass is in motion)
c. Proposer Only says: "Ready"
d. On command "Ready", bring the glass to your lips, ready to drink from it.
e. Proposer Only says: "Derry-Doon"
f. On the command "Derry-Doon", the Brethren drink their wine,
then return their glass to arms length, eye level.
g. When all have finished their drink and extended their arms, with the glass at eye level, the proposer will give the command "Fire!"
h. On the command "Fire", all, in unison, will strike their Cannons sharply on the Table.
In order to avoid breakage we recommend not getting TOO boisterous,
the glass is not a gavel!
10 The proposer will then say "Together Brethren" for the battery of Three Times Three.
Clap! Clap! Clap!
Clap! Clap! Clap!
Clap! Clap! Clap!
11 Still standing, the Brethren will sing the appropriate song for the Toast.
12 The Master will seat the Brethren with one rap.
13 If the Master wishes, he may ask some Brother to give a response to the toast. The Brother does this, speaking spontaneously about the subject of the toast. The response should be brief. The Brother DOES NOT PROPOSE ANOTHER TOAST!
14 The next toast will then follow in sequence.

It is worth noting that the Good Fire is a triad of seven times three salutes (21 motions in all). The "GOOD FIRE", or "QUICK FIRE" described above is really a 21-gun salute, and in ancient times, especially in the French Rite, the Good Fire was given by an elaborate ritual using heavy "Firing" Glasses or "Cannons" with thick glass bases which could be struck upon the table top in time to the proposer's cadence. We do a version of this.
THE TOASTS

(Speeches and/or music may be interspersed between toasts at the discretion of the Master. Furthermore, he may call for brief remarks from any Brother as a response to any of the toasts.

IMPORTANT NOTE!
NO BROTHER SHOULD PRESUME TO OFFER A TOAST.
TOASTS ARE RESTRICTED TO THOSE LISTED IN THE PROGRAM,
WITH THEIR ORDER AND PROPOSERS DETERMINED BY THE MASTER.

SONG FOR THE SEVENTH TOAST
Play the music
The Tyler's Toast

         "Are your glasses charged in the West and South, the Worshipful Master cries;
         They're charged in the West, They're charged in the South, are the Wardens' prompt replies;
Then to our final toast tonight your glasses fairly drain"
"Happy to meet Sorry to part Happy to meet again!"
"Happy to meet Sorry to part
         Happy to meet again, again,
         Oh! happy to meet again!"

"The Mason's social Brotherhood around the festive board,
Reveal a wealth more precious far than selfish miser's hoard
They freely share the priceless stores that generous hearts contain"
"Happy to meet Sorry to part Happy to meet again!"
"Happy to meet Sorry to part
         Happy to meet again, again,
         Oh! happy to meet again"

We work like Masons free and true, and when our task is done,
         A merry song and cheering glass are not unduly won;
And only at our farewell pledge is pleasure touched with pain
"Happy to meet Sorry to part Happy to meet again"
"Happy to meet Sorry to part
         Happy to meet again, again,
         Oh! happy to meet again"

Amidst our mirth we drink "To all poor Masons o'ver the world"
On every shore our flag of love is gloriously unfurled,
We prize each brother, fair or dark, who bears no moral stain
"Happy to meet Sorry to part Happy to meet again!"
"Happy to meet Sorry to part
         Happy to meet again, again,
         Oh! happy to meet again"

The Mason feels the noble truth the Scottish peasant told
That rank is but the guinea's stamp, the man himself is the gold
With us the rich and poor unite and equal rights maintain
"Happy to meet Sorry to part Happy to meet again!"
"Happy to meet Sorry to part
         Happy to meet again, again,
         Oh! happy to meet again"

Dear Brethren of the Mystic Tie, the night is waning fast
Our duty's done, our feast is o'er; this song must be the last
"Good Night, Good Night." Once more, once more repeat the farewell strain
"Happy to meet, sorry to part, happy to meet again!"
"Happy to meet Sorry to part
         Happy to meet again, again,
         Oh! happy to meet again"

W.M. The Master will seat the Brethren with one rap.

CLOSING THE LODGE
The Master's Charge at Closing

W.M. (Rises)
"Brethren, you are now to quit this sacred retreat of friendship and virtue, to mix again with the world. Amidst its concerns and employments, forget not the duties you have heard so frequently inculcated and forcibly recommended in this Lodge. Be diligent, prudent, temperate, discreet. Remember that around our altar you have promised to befriend and relieve every Worthy Brother who shall need your assistance. Remember that you have promised to remind him, in the most tender manner, of his failings, and aid his reformation. These generous principles are to extend further. Every human being has a claim upon your kind offices, Do good unto all. Recommend it more especially to the household of the faithful. Finally, Brethren, be ye all of one mind, live in peace, and may the God of love and peace delight to dwell with and bless you."                        (Brother Thaddeus Mason Harris, 1792 Grand Lodge of Massachusetts)

J.W. "Brethren on the column of the South, I inform you on behalf of the W.M., that we are about to close this Lodge, ending our work in the usual manner."
W.M. "Brother Chaplain, you will lead us in prayer."
Chaplain ALMIGHTY GOD in whom we live and move and have our being, and through whom are all things builded if they are to endure, we lay before Thee the aspirations of our hearts and the work of our hands, asking that they may be found worthy in Thy sight.
As we have collaborated here in Thy presence and under Thy guidance, may we, as we go our separate ways, carry with us the inspiration of this hour. May each in his respective walk of life give practical expression and helpful furtherance to the ideals that here prevail.
Forgive us our transgressions and abide with us in all the vicissitudes of life.
Make happy our homes and loved ones, prosper our Fraternity, our community and Nation, and lead us all to Thy glory in service to Thee, our Country our Fraternity and our fellow men.
AMEN
