FROM THE WEST

Brethren:

I mentioned the secret modes of recognition that we as Masons use to recognize each other in last month's message. This month, I continue with a different position regarding Secret versus Open in order to convey a point of view that I read in my January mailing from the Southern California Research Lodge. The piece that I read was attributed to an article by Peter H. Jantz in the September/October 2004 Scottish Rite Journal.

Brother Jantz, in that article, uses the word Open to refer to all the Masonic books and periodicals that describe Masonic history and philosopy available to the public. He then uses the word Secret to refer to our passwords, grips and modes of recognition that he compares to your bank account PIN number or computer access code. The PIN number like our modes of recognition, he says, is no good if everyone knows it. He then further defines Secret in the following passage:

"As to Secret, the only secrets are your personal understandings or insights as you study Masonic teachings and participate in the Craft. You may experience these insights at any moment of your life, including of course, when you witness Freemasonry's Degrees. These insights are 'secret' because they are your special understanding and yours alone. The best part is that these 'secrets' are open and available to everyone. It's true that you have to dig for gold, it's not lying on the surface in plain sight - but it's worth digging for - and we all can dig.

Books are available and everyone may study them to increase their personal understanding. I challenge you to do so. Come learn Masonry's 'secrets'. Nowadays, they are even online! Hundreds of websites focus on Masonry, and there are internet chat rooms where you can exchange ideas with both non-Masons and Brothers. But it is up to you to find the truth, in the plethora of diverse information. Discuss, study, experience and enjoy those deeply felt Masonic insights which you would love to share, but you can't, really, because they are your own special, personal and, therefore, 'secret' insights."

Fraternally Yours,
