My dear Masonic Family!
Welcome to 2008!
With the start of the new year, and my term as Master, I am excited and, honestly, slightly daunted at the prospect of what is to come. I found myself reflecting at length (or as Ted likes to call it, procrastinating) before being able to write my first article as Master, as both the symbolic and logistical implications of the position are finally setting in.
Logistically, I have a tendency to let details work themselves out, and focus on a bigger picture. Sometimes, I do this to the detriment of details that don't quite work themselves out. In my new role, I'm already discovering the value and, frankly, necessity for successful delegation, so important details aren't missed. Planning for installation, as well as slowly putting a structure in place to manage all the committies and events coming up this year, has already shown me many weaknesses in myself and my organizational skills. I'm glad for this leadership training, as it's by these small failings that I learn, grow, and, in turn, am able to share this growth with you.
Symbolically, as Master, it should be by my wisdom that the edifice of 2008 is designed, and by my well-thought-out instruction that the labors of all Hollywood Lodge's Masons may be directed to erect it. Daunting. Yet, even when I doubt my own wisdom or instruction, I have faith in the trust you have reposed in me. The necessary wisdom and instruction comes from my passion for what I have found great about Masonry: great men; common goals to help each other and the community; and the desire to understand ourselves and our fellow man better, and improve ourselves to that effect. My goals therefore, will be to provide an environment to foster these great qualities, to educate and inform not only Masons, but the community about Masonry, and to arrange for social and ritualistic opportunities to have shared and joint experiences.
And, with your help, the details will work themselves out.
Thank you all for your confidence in me, and I'm truly looking forward to our journey together this year.
David Sylvester
Master
