FROM THE SOUTH

Brethren:

I have been rewarded with an opportunity to get to know our newly obligated brethren and to share their stories with all of you.

Robert Podany was made an Entered Apprentice Mason on January 13, 2005. He is 20 years old and lives in the San Fernando Valley. He was born in the city of Kirkland, Washington which was originally founded in the 1880s by the British steel tycoon, Peter Kirk. Later, Robert grew up as an Air Force brat in countries such as Germany and Guam, and more recently in the states of Virginia and Texas. Robert came out to California at the behest of his grandmother, a retiree of NASA, who offered to help him with his college education. He is currently admitted to CSUN and is pursuing a Bachelor's in Information Sciences. Robert describes himself as an entertaining and easy going guy who only gets mad when he is "punched in the face"... Hats off to you Robert, if only all of us could be so easy going!

Eduardo Ortega was passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on January 20, 2005. He is 45 years old and was born in Mexico. He and his family moved to the States in the 1970s where he attended Roosevelt High School and L.A. Trade Tech College. Eduardo eventually gained employment with BCB Management as an electrician and has remained with the company for the last 22 years. Eduardo is also the father of a 21 year old son, from a previous marriage. He said the greatest moment of his life was the day his son was born, despite running out of gas on his way to the hospital on that rainy day. For those who may not already know, Eduardo recently married Stephanie Shapiro, daughter to our brother Maury Shapiro, on Christmas of last year. Eduardo considers himself an outgoing guy who likes outdoor activities. However, his greatest love, wife aside of course, is the making and building of new things. Perhaps this explains why he was drawn to Masonry. For in Masonry, Eduardo can continue making new friendships and building a personal edifice whereby he can become a better man.

Well brethren, there are our newly obligated brothers of January 2005. If you happen to see them at Lodge, they are the ones with the funny badges, please take a moment to introduce yourself. We should always remember that we are the organizaion they are entering. We are already comfortable with our surroundings, and they however, may not be and need us to make them feel welcomed. Till next time...

Cheers,

James Bayhylle
