FROM THE SOUTH - July 2005

Hail Brethren!

This month I would like to take a minute to promote our membership drive starting in July.

Our first event is on Saturday, July 23rd at 2pm at Lake Balboa. We will be having a Luau Picnic for masons and non-masons alike.

The following Thursday, July 28th at 7pm at the Lodge, will be our Masonic Information Night. The evening will include a dinner and guest speaker, Dr. Margaret C. Jacob, a professor from UCLA. She is also an author of Masonic history and is currently writing the book, "The Origins of Freemasonry. Facts and Fictions". She will be discussing Freemasonry as it pertains to the 18th century and will have a Q&A period following her lecture. If you or any of your friends are curious to sort out the many "stories" about Freemasonry, I encourage you all to come to this informative evening. For more details, feel free to give me a call.

Finally, Sunday, July 31st, we will be having a twist on the movie night. Instead of an afternoon of popcorn and candy, we will have an afternoon of culture and class. The Schuman’s have elected to take us to see the play Destiny’s Calling at 3pm at the Stella Adler theater in Hollywood. Tickets are $27.00. Please visit http://www.destinyscalling.net/ and discover more about this play. For any other information, please contact Ted or Penny Schuman.

Some of you may have noticed, we have had a small decline in blue applications of late. Our officers believe it is very important that we concentrate on discovering new members who will both benefit from their membership and contribute to our ancient institution. Many of you might say, "Well we aren’t supposed to sell membership, because each member must ask of his own free will and accord." This is true. Each new candidate must ask to become a member of our Lodge. However, there is a saying I learned back in college, "The secret of freedom lies in educating people, whereas the secret of tyranny is in keeping them ignorant." This quote directly applies to us. If we do not make an effort to educate people about our organization, how will they know to ask? So when meeting other people, do not hoard your knowledge about our venerable fraternity, but instead share it with others, so they might also be given the chance to see the light by which masons work.

Cheers!
