Masonic Terminology
Blue Lodge - So called because "The Covering of a Lodge is no less than the clouded canopy or star-decked heaven ..." (See 'Lodge')
Cipher - A small blue reference book, printed by the Grand Lodge, containing much of the Masonic Ritual. It is encoded, and can only be purchased by Master Masons.
Degree - Literally, a step. There are three Degrees in "Blue-Lodge" Masonry: Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason.
Hiram Award - [HA] An award given to a Mason by his lodge, honoring him for performing outstanding Masonic service.
Junior Past Master - [JPM] A Mason who served as Master of a lodge the year before.
Junior Warden - [JW] The "Third in Command" of a lodge. Similar to "Second Vice-President" in another organization.
Lewis - A candidate for the Degrees of Masonry whose father is a Master Mason.
Lodge - A Lodge is a certain number of brethren duly assembled, with a Holy Bible, a Square and Compass, and a Charter or Dispensation authorizing them to meet.
Master - A Mason who is currently Master of a lodge. Similar to "President" in another organization.
Monitor - A small booklet containing some of the Masonic Ritual in plain English. It also contains the agenda to be used at Stated Meetings, along with other useful information upon which all Lodge Officers depend.
Past Master - [PM] A Mason who has served as Master of a lodge.
Proficiency - A Mason must demonstrate his knowledge in each Degree before the Lodge. He is then qualified to be advanced to the next Degree.
Senior Warden - [SW] The "Second in Command" of a lodge. Similar to "First Vice-President" in another organization.
Sideliner - A Mason who, when attending a Masonic meeting, is not sitting as an Officer of the Lodge.
Stated Meeting - The monthly business meeting of a lodge. It is called "Stated" because when and where said meetings are to take place are so stated in the Lodge's Charter.
Trestle Board - A periodic "newsletter" of a lodge, usually published monthly. It shows the meetings and other activities of the lodge scheduled for the period and messages from the East, West, and South are presented. Meetings and activities of concordant bodies are usually included.
