Message from the East

Brethren,

Those brethren who were at our stated Meeting in April witnessed what is easily one of the longest business meetings we have had in quite some time-- all of it good. The Lodge balloted favorably on three applications for degrees, and at least two of them (new brothers West and Metz) will have been initiated by the time you read this message. We will be scheduling the remaining candidate(s) for initiation in May. We were also very pleased to receive 4 additional applications (2 newcomers and 2 affiliations).

Brother Marcus Quina has been away from the lodge for some time but has now returned. Welcome back Brother!.

Brothers Casey and Virgil Quina Sr., PM, were elected to fill vacancies on our Hall Association board. The Hall association board has recently had its responsibilities increased with the realization that, quite properly, they (and not the lodge) need to manage our cemetary property. We are fortunate to have the expertise of Brother Casey in this area as well as the experience of Brother Virgil to help the Hall Association meet its responsibilities.

Finally, I am especially pleased to note that Brother Ethan Meyer was elected and has accepted the position of Junior Warden of Montery Lodge for the remainder of this Masonic Year. Brother Ethan recently took the time from his own busy schedule to attend the Junior Warden's retreat and has lots of good ideas on how we can continue to strengthen the Lodge. As many of you may know, several of us retread past masters have been working for the past 5 years or so to get new blood into the Wardens and Master's chairs with the strong conviction that a Lodge that does not have fresh blood and new ideas will not survive. All the brethren should sieze upon this opportunity to support brother Ethan and follow him through the chairs in the spirit of renewal of Monterey Lodge.

Yours in Masonry

Walt C00ley, Jr.,PM, Master

Message from the West

Brethren,

I continue to search out the literary works of Masons and find many lengthy essays; which are good. I am specically looking ro the short quotes or poetic verses that suit our needs as Masons and Humans. I found this verse by Brother Edgar A. Guest entitled "Lord, Make a Reqular Man Out Of Me". It is particularly fitting to what we as Masons study in our work.

"Lord, Make a Regular Man Out Of Me, This I would like to be--braver and bolder, Just a bit wiser because I am older, Just a bit kinder to those I may meet, Just a bit manlier taking defeat; This for the New Year my wish and my plea-- Lord, make a regular man out of me.

"This I would like to be--Just a bit finer, More of a smiler and less of a whiner, Just a bit quicker to stretch out my hand, Helping another who's struggling to stand, This is my prayer for the New Year to be, Lord, make a regular man out of me.

"This I would like to be--just a bit fairer, Just a bit better, and just a bit squarer, Not quite so ready to censure blame, Quicker to help everyman in the game, Not quite so eager man's failings to see, Lord, make a regular man out of me.

"This I would like to be--just a bit truer, Less of the wisher and more of the doer, Broader and bigger, more willing to give, Living and helping my neighbor to live! This for the New Year my prayer and my plea-- Lord, make a regular man out of me."

-Edgar A. Guest
