![]() First Hartley Lodge, Forbes Street, 1869-1874 Hartley Lodge today, Main Street, Lakeport
The first Hartley Lodge meeting under dispensation occurred May 1, 1869, with Brother Allen D. Greene as Master. Lodge was held on the second story of the Forbes Street building pictured above. Charter was granted later that year to the lodge on October 14. The first Master under charter was Woods Crawford. From 1874 to 1906, the brethren of Hartley Lodge met in the second floor of the IOOF Hall, located on the east side of Main Street between First and Second Streets. The cornerstone for the current lodge, located on Fourth and Main in Lakeport, was laid on Saturday, September 30, 1905. Construction soon began, although less than a year later the great earthquake of 1906 completely leveled the building. Sadly, the brick walls had not been finished and tied yet, allowing for their collapse. Within one year, however, dedication ceremonies were held in the newly reconstructed temple, where they have been held ever since.
Henry Hare Hartley, 1826-1868 Hartley Lodge #199, F & A.M., was named in honor of Past Deputy Grand Master Henry Hare Hartley. Born in Devonshire, England, Henry moved to California in 1849. By 1850, he was the first Judge of Yolo County and in 1860 he was a candidate for a Judge of the Supreme Court of the State of California. A member of Washington Lodge No. 20, in Sacramento, Henry was a distinguished Mason in various clubs and in Grand Lodge of California. On March 12, 1868, Brother Hartley died at the age of 41. Had he lived, he would have been installed as Most Worshipful Grand Master of the State of California that same year.
