Master's Message

January 2012 Trestleboard

My Brethren,  A Missive from the East;

First and foremost, may I congratulate Past Master Peter Quartarolo on an excellent year.  He has again led us in an educational and inspirational fashion.  “An example, worthy of imitation.”

To Brothers James Campbell, PM and Milo Hoovler, PM, I offer my profound appreciation for the outstanding manner in which you performed our installation.  It will be one of my fondest memories and proudest moment.  Thank you to Brother Jose Plata for the excellent Prime Rib Dinner.  We anticipate many more fine dining moments with you at the helm of our kitchen.

I am very proud of the new line of officers.  I know each of you will do well in your new positions and I look forward with great pleasure to working with you in the coming year.  We are a new line and I am sure Brother Mike Prather, PM will be most diligent in our training.  As we have several brothers ready to advance, it is important that we practice at every possible occasion.  Brother Dave Jones, PM, Inspector for our district has informed me he intends to have a school of instruction in January.  As soon as the date is finalized, I will inform the Officers.

I would like to continue a project started by Brother Peter Quartarolo, PM this past year.  I have asked Brother Doug Prather to furnish an article each Trestleboard, and I have asked Brother Peter to have an educational presentation at Stated Meetings when he has available time.
Together, may we grow in Masonry and Brotherly Love.

Fraternally,

J. J. Jackson, Master

Lessons from the South

That Ran Down Upon the Beard, Even Aaron’s Beard

This month’s lesson reflects on the perambulation of the 1st degree, which details the apparently fantastic facial hair of the mystery man, Aaron. Who exactly was Aaron?

Aaron was the older brother of Moses.  We read in Exodus 4:10-16 that Moses was not a good speaker and possibly even had a speech impediment.  Aaron served as his spokesman.  Aaron was also well known as a peacemaker.  Whatever the conflict, he was willing to step between the opponents to resolve the issue.

While there are numerous accounts of the deeds performed by Aaron, of focus here is his beard.  Aaron did indeed have a beard, but by all accounts, it was your run-of-the-mill, ordinary beard without any glorious qualities.  Aaron was, however, named the first Kohen (priest) of Israel.  At his appointment, he was anointed with oil, which apparently ran down upon his beard, to the collar of his robe, giving us the reference in Masonic ritual.  The “skirts of his garments” has also been translated as the “collar” or “shoulder” of his garments, which is where some of the confusion has originated.

Next month, we will continue the analysis of the perambulation and investigate the wonder of the “dew of Hermon”.
