From the Secretary... January/February/March
In my many conversations with our new Master over the past few months it became obvious that he has a very ambitious plan for 2008! I won't tread on his territory to explain it, but I can tell you that there are plans for a Super Bowl Party, the Sweetheart's Lunch, a picnic, another musical concert and an outing to the California Magic Dinner Theatre. The Master has plans for increasing membership and fund raising. Both items are extremely important. We have not held a Third Degree since September 16, 2005. There have been some affiliations since then, but overall membership is down. We have several Entered Apprentices and Fellowcrafts out there who we need to encourage to complete their obligations and become fully active members of our Lodge. On the financial side, we have been notified that Mr. Geddes will be closing his music store. The rent received is very important to us. We must plan what to do with the space when the store closes. One idea is to re-model and turn the space into a hall we can rent for group events. A second idea is to divide the store into three smaller spaces and rent it out as offices. Either plan will require a great deal of money to implement. (I note that Diablo Valley Lodge is facing a similar decision; refurbish, build new or seek another site. Each option estimated to cost 1.5-2 million dollars. They also mentioned joining with other Lodges to create a shared Masonic Center.) The Geddes lease expires in about 18 months. We welcome your ideas.**** It appears that 2008 will be a busy, fun and hectic year.****On November 23rd we performed a Masonic funeral and graveside services for Bro. James W. Lester of Quincy Lodge # 296,Quincy, Ill. Though an Antioch resident, he was not a member of our Lodge. He was known to many by his membership in the now defunct Delta Shrine Club. ****
FUN NIGHT OUT! We are planning a group night out at the California Magic Dinner Theatre in Martinez. The flyer on the next page provides some details. The shows are on Friday and Saturday nights, tickets are $60.00 and must be purchased in advance. I am keeping an informal "sign up sheet" to try and assemble a group of 10 to 20 or more people from ANY of our concordant groups. This is NOT just for Masons. I am presently considering Feb. 8/9, 22/23 or March 14/15,21/22 as possible dates. As of mid-December I have 10 people tentatively signed up. When we reach a good number, 16-20, of solid commitments I will make the reservation. As the flyer suggests, go to the Magic Theatre web site, www.calmagic.com, for additional information. From all I hear this is a wonderful experience. And it's in our backyard! Please contact me, arg8666@aol.com, or call me, 777-1198, if you would like to attend.** Thank you all for sending in your dues so promptly! I am really pleased at the great response. It makes the job so much easier for me and our Treasurer, Rich Barber. ** I missed the Christmas Party ( in Germany visiting Christmas markets with Jeri and the David Taylor’s), but I hear the attendance was a great disappointment, particularly from the Concordant organizations. Seems we need a serious talk before next Christmas. ** The Dec. 1st installation went well with the usual excellent job by Larry Dowell, Joe Wies and Dan Halstead. The ham dinner following the ceremony was outstanding! Thank you O.E.S.!! My personal thanks to Tim & Colleen Veneck for handling the liquid refreshments for the Belshaw Club. That service should be a fixture at most of our upcoming adult events, such as the February Super Bowl Party, etc.*** It is time to renew the business card ads in the TBIB. $50 for the year. We could sure use a few more ads. Will more of you please help??
