Frequently Asked Questions
about the
California Lodges Domain

(Please also see our
"Purpose,
Procedures and Policies" page)

Who owns CALODGES.ORG?
This domain is owned by the Grand Lodge of California, Free and Accepted Masons.
The registered Administrative Contact with the InterNIC is the Grand
Secretary.
1111 California Street,
San Francisco, CA 94108-2204

What does CALODGES.ORG cost Grand Lodge?
The annual domain registration fees to the InterNIC are paid for by Grand
Lodge, in specific by the Grand Secretary.
No other expense is incurred by Grand Lodge for the current
httpd/mail/ftp
and other servers associated with the CALODGES.ORG domain. Since the services are
being donated, we do ask that Lodge web authors adhere to the established 20Megabyte limit
and only files actively in use by the Lodge Web Site be stored on the server.
(Webmasters - please also see the note below about "Backups").

Who operates CALODGES.ORG?
This domain is operated by the IT department of Grand Lodge which reports to the Grand Secretary, on matters appertaining to
this domain.

Do I have to move my Lodge's Web Site to this
domain?
Absolutely not! It is an "entitlement" not a
"requirement". Each Masonic Lodge in this jurisdiction is
"entitled" to take advantage of the availability of this service, not
"required" to do so.

Can we move our domain name over for hosting
by Grand Lodge?
Not at this time. CALODGES.ORG is, in itself, a domain, (not an ISP)
- therefore, it cannot host other domains. It can, however, host Lodge "web
sites". Currently, each requesting Lodge is assigned an address under
CALODGES.ORG which consists of the Lodge Number. For example, Lakeside Lodge No. 760
is:
http://www.calodges.org/No760/

What is FTP?
FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol" and is the most common
means of updating/maintaining a World Wide Web site on the Internet today. When
assigned an FTP account, the Lodge Web Master/Author uses it to log onto the calodges.org
FTP server via his particular FTP Client software, and is automatically taken to the
appropriate "home" directory for his Lodge. He may then use it to
upload/download files to support maintenance of the Lodge Web Site. FTP Client
software is available for all of today's Operating Systems - as commercial products,
shareware and freeware. While we cannot promote any individual type, an example of a
free FTP Client for Windows95, 98 and NT is FTP Commander which is available from www.internet-soft.com - there are hundreds of
others.

What are the Microsoft FrontPage Extensions?
This actually refers to "Server" Extensions available free from
MicroSoft to enhance the web server's capability to service Web Authors who enjoy using
their commercial product, Microsoft FrontPage. (They permit usage of the associated
"WebBot" technology). Those "extensions" have been installed on
this domain and individual FrontPage "accounts" are available upon request if
the Lodge Web Author happens to prefer to use that means of updating/publishing his Lodge
Web Site. We do not "promote" the use of any commercial product. The
extensions are merely here to permit expanded service to those requesting it.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
A Lodge Web Site being maintained by FrontPage should never be uploaded to the
server via FTP. Serious corruption of the "hidden" files which support use
of the "WebBots" will occur. Please use the FrontPage Explorer "File
| Publish FrontPage Web" functionality instead.

Can I run my own CGI Scripts?
In a word, no - for security reasons and to preserve the "sanctity" of the
host servers. However, if you have a script with functionality important
to your Lodge Web Site, please feel free to communicate with
the support team, (Technical Support), who will make
every effort to accommodate the functionality desired.

What are those sub-directories starting with
"_vti"?
The technical team, supporting the calodges domain, is currently using Microsoft
Frontpage (TM) to provide overall management of the domain itself. All of those
directories, starting with an underscore character, are a side-effect of that effort.
They were automatically created, along with an "images" sub-directory, by
FrontPage itself. Each time we log on to the domain, all of the contents of those
directories are automatically updated by the FrontPage Server extensions which permits us
to do things like checking for broken links, etc.
Please do not edit/delete those sub-directories (folders) or upload anything into them
as you could corrupt the FrontPage Server Extensions themselves.

Do You do backups of my site for me?
In a word - no. Please do not count on us to provide backups of
your Lodge web site. This is a free hosting service and we count on
the individual Lodge Web Master to keep his own archives.
